A refined editorial website designed to make long-form design writing feel clear, engaging, and effortless.
See it live
I started by pulling together a moodboard to establish an editorial direction — [drop a line here on what you were chasing: e.g. "leaning into classic print-magazine cues like generous whitespace and serif headlines, balanced against a modern, functional grid"]. From there I moved into wireframes to work out content hierarchy and responsive behavior before touching visual design, since the client's top priority was consistency across a huge volume of existing content types.
Design Observer is an established online publication with a large volume of editorial content, from long-form essays and commentary to interviews, articles, and visual stories. The challenge was to create a website that felt distinctly editorial while remaining simple, approachable, and highly functional. The client was exceptionally detail-oriented and wanted a pixel-perfect, highly consistent design system across the entire site — every page, content block, typographic treatment, spacing value, image treatment, and responsive state needed to feel intentional and consistent. With a website built around substantial amounts of written content, the design also needed to prioritize readability and hierarchy without becoming visually monotonous.
The redesign was well received by the client, who was particularly happy with the consistency and attention to detail across desktop and mobile. The simplified editorial layout also created a more comfortable reading experience, with clearer typography, spacing, and content hierarchy making long-form articles easier to navigate and digest. The resulting design provides a polished, cohesive foundation for Design Observer's ongoing editorial content while keeping the focus on the writing itself.

I focused primarily on the UI/UX and visual design, translating the editorial requirements into a consistent interface across the site's pages and responsive breakpoints. The project required a high level of attention to detail, particularly around typography, spacing, grids, reusable components, and pixel-level consistency.
